Approach In assessing an existing structure, we consider the original design, the condition of materials, the effects of age and past usage, and the requirements for continued service.
At Sparks Engineering, Inc., we have developed a systematic approach to the evaluation of existing structures. Our approach is based on the following key elements:

Knowledge of the original structural systems
We have developed an understanding of older systems through our extensive research into older and historic structural design and construction methods.

Structural analysis
We use an appropriate level of engineering analysis for the structure.  Analysis tools range from hand calculations to computerized finite element analysis.

Testing
When required, testing may include exploration, physical testing of material samples, and non-destructive testing.

Condition Survey
We gather visual observations of the condition of structural elements, such as cracks, deformation, material integrity, and past modifications.

Engineering Judgment
As specialists in existing structures, we have an understanding of the long-term behavior of materials and systems, and have accumulated specialized experience through observation, testing, and analysis.  We use our judgment to develop an informed, reliable evaluation.
