Preservation Philosophy

SEI is an established leader in the discipline of preservation (or conservation) engineering.  Our approach to historic structures is guided and informed not only by sound engineering practices, but also by our understanding of the basic tenets of historic preservation as outlined in the
Secretary of the Interior's Standards.

We look for sensitive methods of strengthening and conservation, and avoid unnecessary or inappropriate intervention. We have developed an extensive library of historic reference books and test data for materials that are no longer being produced, such as wrought iron, terra cotta, and concrete reinforcement.

When testing is needed, we use appropriate nondestructive methods.  Physical samples, if necessary, are usually small and taken from areas that will not affect the historic or structural integrity of the building.
